Knights Suffer 4-0 Setback -- 11th June 2005

Knights Suffer 4-0 Setback

Filed by Kevin Teo at 10:23 PM on June 11, 2005

The Canberra Knights were shutout for the first time this season when they suffered a 4-0 loss against the Western Sydney Ice Dogs at the Phillip Ice House in their Australian Ice Hockey League game earlier tonight.

Alex Djamirze led the way for the Ice Dogs with two goals as the they fought their way to their first win since April - breaking a seven game skid.

The game looked promising early on for the Knights who got an lengthy power play opportunity early in the game when three consecutive penalties were called on Western Sydney players.

The Knights were however unable to score despite having the almost half the opening period on the man-advantage, and the Ice Dogs raced their way to a 3-0 lead.

The first goal came through Paul Symonds who profited from a goal-mouth scramble.

Djamirze got the second shortly after, tapping home after Knights goalie Dylan Smart had stopped Mikael Englund’s initial breakaway attempt.

The first period also saw the first bout of the game when the Knights’ Trevor Ross tangled with the Ice Dogs’ Chris Sekura, both fighters landing several haymakers before the linesmen moved in. Both players were ejected.

The night’s entertainment was over from that point however as the Ice Dogs’ clutch-and-grab tactics forced the game into a scrappy neutral zone battle.

The Knights got their only real scoring chance with four minutes left in the second period but were denied when Ice Dogs goalie Alan Becken made a sprawling recovery to stop the puck on the line.

The third period was much the same and tempers boiled over again with just under five minutes to go as Canberra’s Mike Funk got into a scrap with Western Sydney’s Trevor Abel who had intervened in an altercation between Funk and Ross McDougall.

Funk and Abel were sent to dressing room, as was the Knights’ David Batho who was called for checking from behind on the play. The Ice Dogs added their final goal on the ensuing power play.

The Knights host the Sydney Bears next Saturday before getting another crack at the Ice Dogs on the road at Blacktown on June 25.
