The Canberra Knights evened the season series against the Western Sydney Ice Dogs with a 5-3 win at Blacktown Ice Arena in their AIHL game last night.
Shaun Fairweather scored two goals to lead the Knights as they improved to 5-1 on the road.
Showing a lot more grunt than the team that was blanked 4-0 at home by the Ice Dogs two weeks ago, Canberra needed just two minutes to light the lamp, with Fairweather shooting high over the glove of Western Sydney’s Alan Becken for the game’s opening goal.
The Ice Dog’s Jakub Makalous banged home a rebound off an Anthony Wilson shot to tie game towards the end of the first period before Alex Djamirze tipped in another Wilson shot to give the home side a 2-1 lead a minute and a half into the second.
But he Knights’ Fairweather produced a sublime piece of play to the Knights back in the hunt.
Crashing the net after teammate Clint Lorteau’s shot was knocked down by Becken, Fairweather overskated the puck slightly but pulled back and snapped the a goal with his stick between his legs.
Western Sydney would however end the period a goal up on an Andrew White tally although the lead would only last a minute into the final period.
The Knights’ David Lewis, who had earlier had a tooth knocked out by a slap shot, levelled the score with an acute angle flip shot.
The winning goal for Canberra came a minute later when Mike Harrow took a Fairweather pass in the slot and fired in for his sixth goal of the season.
The Knights would add an insurance goal five minutes from the end when Trevor Ross connected with a cross-crease pass from Matt Lehoczky.
Canberra opens a tough three-game series on the road against the free-scoring Brisbane Blue Tongues on July 2. The series concludes at the Phillip Ice House on July 9. |
